100 percent agree, Diablo. Snacking is one sneaky way of going over calories allotted for the day as a lot of the time we just forget to record them. But restaurant food is probably the hardest to accurately track.

I think it's more that some people either don't log those 2 Oreos thinking the extra couple hundred calories aren't gonna show up on the scale. Or they'll underestimate that "handful of chips" was actually double the serving size if they were to weigh it out. It's kinda just lying to themselves and then wondering why the pounds won't come off. If they weighed everything to the gram and ate only what they recorded in their food diary - assuming it was less calories than they used that day (and the database recording is accurate - they would begin to see consistent losses. It takes an acknowledgement that there is a problem with wanting to see perfect numbers (or not wanting to see that they overeat) before actually making a stand and losing the weight. When it comes to fat loss, honest really is the best policy! 🤘

So Chris, dare you say I should count the nuts, cheese, and random pickles that accidentally popped into my mouth?! 😁 That’s a pain to log, I guess I won’t eat that random stuff anymore for boy, I am at a stall!🙃

I agree - that is probably all of the reason that people do not lose weight. Unless a medical condition prevails or some other intake like prescriptions or drugs and alcohol - in my situation - right now - after the chips are gone - it would be - HOLY MUCK there was 290 calories in that peanut butter cliff bar - and I already knew that. Protein up - and maybe just maybe - the Fat Loss Gods will be on my side. You mean that kind of thinking --- that is the truth.

I think a lot of people on diets eat too little to lose weight fast & their metabolic rate drops. I have yoyoed all my life & I obviously over-ate to put on the weight yes, but I have dropped my intake to as little as 800 cals & still not lost weight ! That was long before we had sites like these to help us. My goal is to lose 100g a week & keep it off without getting my body used to too little intake, so I tend to eat as much as I can of a balanced diet. Recently seen the sense of the little pie chart at the bottom of the page very useful!

A history of yo-yo dieting is KNOWN to make weight loss difficult. The TV show NOVA periodically repeats an excellent show called All About the Fat. I watched it again over the weekend with a friend. I highly recommend it. If anyone is interest check your ON DEMAND and see if it is there.

Notice that the lowest energy expenditure is 1500, and this is in people who probably aren't very active. So the idea that obese people must go on very low calorie diets to lose weight is absurd. Most can just cut out soda or reduce the snacks or the portions a bit and see the weight fly off.

Yo-yo dieting in the past suggests the person has difficulty sticking to a diet, or has chosen impossible to stick to habits and then gone back to their previous lifestyle. If nothing changes, of course future weight loss will be more difficult (it predicts it) but it isn't for a physiological reason.

Absolutely 100% underreporting. I feel like I am an expert tracker and still will forget and have to add something the next day. Sometimes it is only 40 calories forgotten but for someone who doesn't track at all who thinks he/she has eaten well- it adds up quickly. So- whether it is because of what Chris says or just being forgetful- the fact is that people dramatically underestimate.

I now keep measuring cups out on the kitchen counter top, which work fine with the fs food choices

This inspired me to weigh some things I was eyeballing. Reporting slips very easily!

I love my little food scale. I measure just about everything, in grams and oz. I generally save my measuring cups & spoons for liquids. It only takes an extra few minutes to measure out your foods and it's peace of mind at the end of the night knowing that the calories you have consumed are much more accurately being accounted for.

I try to measure/ weigh everything I put in my mouth. And I've been in maintenance for 2 years. Sometimes just knowing I'll have to take the time to calculate the calories in that little nibble prevents me from eating it! I remember way back when saying...I don't eat that much....I eat healthy...why can't I lose weight??!!
