Plant Snap says that this is a Persimmon. However, there are a wide variety of persimmons. This may be an American Persimmons which only grows to be about the size of a crabapple, and has no commercial value. They're bitter until soft and have a really high ratio of skin to flesh, so they're mostly inedible.

looks like you figured it out, Jergens. what a crazy plant. I was nervous enough stealing one berry and leaves, so will not be making anything from it. I would never have called it a cacti, but makes sense since the yard it is in does not get regular watering. PERESKIA - Tropical Barbados Gooseberry Thorny Rose if you don't read all the messages.

wow, the plant and fruit certainly look exotic! I guess it's not poisonous so that a plus.

I searched - images of thorny plants with fruit and the image scrolled up and after many others... and I said ... Ah there it is - my first reaction was a bit of repulsion and it used for many medicinal purposes by some isolated villagers with positive results recorded in studies by researchers. Very interesting.

The house where it’s planted has it all along their fence line. They keep chickens and live near a park where I see coyotes at night on a fairly regular basis. I’m guessing this keeps all sorts of things out of their yard. Those thorns were scary looking.
