A stew would be great! I’ve never had sardines in stew. But I love fish chowder!

I enjoy almost all fish and seafood. But I have yet to try sardines, or Kippered Snacks. I bought some cans of sardines a few weeks ago because of the protein content, and the cans remain unopened. WHY? Beccause I cannot seem to wrap my head around eating the skin, and the bones of these little nutritious morsels. I already carefully pick out the bones & skin in a can of salmon, before I mash it for sandwiches. So for sardines, I think I would have resort to using my eyebrow tweezers to carefully de-skin and de-bone them first. As I write this it seems so ridiculous! My 6 cans of sardines, will likely end up in someone's sock in 3 weeks.

I am going to follow your lead. Just instead of sardines using smelt seasoned with garlic, avocado oil, s&p, in the air frier.

Those soft little bones are the most nutritious part - full of calcium and collagen.

Ah Deelbee, Erika has it right. Canning fish softens the bones to the point they are completely edible. They did a study on Southeast Asians the had come to the US and were lactose intolerant - but were not getting enough calcium (not just fractures, rickets but also increased heart attack risk). They went back to see the original diet and found large use of ground fish bones, crab and prawn shells. This was better for bone building because is also had trace minerals (zinc, copper -high immunity), magnesium. Phosphorus etc and the calcium was easier to be absorbed. The end result a better building block for bones than milk. However for milk and cheese lovers out there the addition of fermented products (kefir, yogurt) and kale, spinach, brocolli, arugula had similar results. Even since reading that study I have eaten prawn shells. Seemed strange at first but now hardly give it a second thought. Also bake mackel with my vegatables and grind the nones after cooking for my broths. Canned is eaier so no meed to grind.

All true. I love them and try to eat them twice a week.
