It's the tale of the tail of a whale. I did it on porpoise - that's for shrewd. Saw a blue whale breach multiple times, went through a superpod of common dolphins, as in 300. Of course I totally missed the shot of the massive body but I did get some good ones of the tail. I don't care that I missed it, I got to experience it with my eyes instead of the lens. Definitely doing this again. I know we're exceptionally lucky to have seen this first time out in years. I've zoomed in on the pics after years and years of "airplane" pics which are primarily blue sky with a dot. This beautiful creature was enormous. In the last pic, it takes up the whole frame. It was doing swirls in the water. We were on an 87' boat and the guide said it was definitely bigger than us. I don't even know how to explain this magic.

Now, in all seriousness, this will be the last bump up. I'm sore from swimming and some weights I've been playing with and the blob is rejoicing, but muscle is also up, more on that. Spent almost the entire three hours on the boat on my feet "snowboarding" the swells. I looked stupid, didn't care, it was great exercise. Three of us ended up doing it towards the front of the boat. we had 3-4' swells with 4 seconds between sets so it was a pretty bumpy ride and perfect for it.

The eating was huge breakfast, no lunch or water until we got back at which point I sucked up two twenty ounce bottles, a large Diet Pepsi and a large unsweetened iced tea no one was touching. We discovered an excellent little restaurant down on the dock which I will be returning to soon and ordering anything not fried. Had raw oysters, halibut, clams, shrimp and other stuff I can't remember. I just used common commercial foods to make sure I logged enough calories. Then, they had ice cream and I ate Halo Top strawberry.

Touristing ends tomorrow with a three week break. But my gosh, I really do love living here. I needed that trip to reaffirm that my life is not all work and that I will make sure to get out and enjoy what I have while I'm here. Now that things are opening up, I think BF and I will go back to our "playing tourist" activities every month or so.

Woke up to the smell of smoke, still haven't figured out what it was, but my little window fan pulled it into the house and I am stuffed up and have the headache from hell at the moment. Hoping it passes soon. It's a great day to be alive, make the best of it. I'm still on my whale high this morning.

That is nuts! I used to love morning runs on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Afterwards, we'd lean over the side near the front and watch the dolphins! I've seen whales, but it was always from a distance - this is super cool! Tip: take video next time, then pull vidcaps later - I'm sure everyone else around you got good pics you could've snagged 😉

Good idea, Chris. I posted my album for family last night, some 240 pics, I want to say a lot of them are live pics, which catches a lot. These were all from my iPhone, I tend to turn photographer with a real camera and I didn't want to do that. I'm toying with the idea of going on the scorpion boat tour, I have two Navy buds that have said they'll go with me so we'll likely wait until later this year when the crowds thin and check the migration charts. I won't be taking pics in a small boat. I have some fear I need to address to do it, but I'm game for it. I don't like deep water where I can't see and you can't see the bottom at 400' plus, but what a bucket list item. Whales don't swallow small boats, do they? 😳 the good news is that I'll do stupid stuff on a dare and I've already told them I want to do it, so not gonna back out if we can swing it.

Lots of drinks, some dramamine, and a strong lanyard for your phone. You'll be fine.

From personal experience, I can tell you whales with baleen will swim right for you as they will mistake you for a giant plankton. The good news is, you won't fit through their filter teeth thingies so it will be more like gently mauling you to death. If they have teeth, you're done for. Period. Good thing you're a fast swimmer though. Might wanna increase your laps before you go just in case... or buy a few cans of Whale Off whale spray - that stuff really works!👌 In a pinch, just run up a tree - whales aren't good climbers. A pack of them may surround the base of the tree, but they'll eventually give up and move on. This is the reason I live above 1000' elevation... I'm deathly afraid of whales!

I don’t usually get seasick. It’s all about the water. Irony of that noted. That said, i went up and back down in a plane without an engine, too, so this should be a piece of cake. Figure that one out?

I don’t know about Chris! 🙃😁 Plus, I don’t know about you Katesolo! How in the heck a person, who swims every day, be scared of the water?🥺 I am shocked!! Absolutely, go in Zodiac!!!!! The Gray Whales would come right up to the boat and eye you. Have an experience of a lifetime! So whales won’t hurt you, yet if the boat gets capsized, which it won’t, all you have to do is swim back to the boat. THE WHALE WON’T TOUCH YOU! No problem, just don’t panic, a rule every scuba diver knows, don’t panic! You’re so lucky, take that opportunity! 👍🌸👍 🐳

Not scared of clear water, just where you can’t see the bottom. And that’s mostly because of crappy friends with river and lake swimming and skiing. But of you say it’s okay, I’ll try it. Best way to deal with a fear is rush it head on, right? And i don’t think it’s paralyzing, it’s just latent. Maybe. Dunno.

Oh my goodness!!!! I can not even imagine. Well, I can imagine a tiny bit since I've done grey whale watching boat ride on the Oregon coast once, but that is nothing compared to what this must have been like. Don't listen to Chris! How many times have we said thst! 😁 Yes, we love you, Chris! Any opportunity to get closer and see more sounds magical! I am so glad you got to enjoy this and havr the opportunity to see more in the future! Soak it all in!!!

But the TEETH are razor sharp and they smell fear!

That is terrifying! Teeth which have olfactory senses do sound scary!

The last time I encountered a whale was on a camping trip in SW Washington in 2012 and I haven't been camping since. They were only belugas, but still... I fought off a whole pack of them with just a hatchet.
