Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight, explained with 60+ studies

"It's hard to create a significant calorie deficit through exercise
Using the National Institutes of Health Body Weight Planner — which gives a more realistic estimation for weight loss than the old 3,500-calorie rule —the NIH's Kevin Hall created this model to show why adding a regular exercise program is unlikely to lead to significant weight loss.

If a hypothetical 200-pound man added 60 minutes of medium-intensity running four days per week while keeping his calorie intake the same, and he did this for 30 days, he'd lose five pounds. "If this person decided to increase food intake or relax more to recover from the added exercise, then even less weight would be lost," Hall added. (More on these "compensatory mechanisms" later.)

So if one is overweight or obese, and presumably trying to lose dozens of pounds, it would take an incredible amount of time, will, and effort to make a real impact through exercise.

That's why Hall thinks researchers find again and again that exercise can help maintain weight loss, but it doesn't help people lose weight. "You need a huge volume of exercise to [burn enough calories for weight loss]," he said. "But to maintain weight loss does not require a deficit of energy."

6) Exercise can undermine weight loss in other, subtle ways
Exercise can even undermine weight loss in subtle ways. How much we move is connected to how much we eat. As Hall put it, "I don't think anybody believes calories in and calories out are independent of each other." And exercise, of course, has a way of making us hungry — so hungry that we might consume more calories than we burned off.

One 2009 study shows that people seemed to increase their food intake after exercise — either because they thought they burned off a lot of calories or because they were hungrier. Another review of studies from 2012 found people generally overestimated how much energy exercise burned and ate more when they worked out.

"YOU WORK HARD ON THAT MACHINE FOR AN HOUR, AND THAT WORK CAN BE ERASED WITH FIVE MINUTES OF EATING AFTERWARD"

There's also evidence to suggest that some people simply slow down after a workout, using less energy on their non-gym activities. They might decide to lie down for a rest, fidget less because they're tired, or take the elevator instead of the stairs.

These changes are usually called "compensatory behaviors," and they simply refer to adjustments we may unconsciously make after working out to offset the calories burned."

I was following a natural bodybuilder on Facebook who wore a weighted vest to do his normal daily activities. and he was able to maintain a 2300 calorie intake even though he was down to the 140s in body weight. For his previous cuts for his bodybuilding competitions he had to reduce his calories into the lower teens to get as cut as he needed to be. he didn't really increase his exercise much he just made himself heavier so all of his exercises were more difficult.

Mike Matthews recent podcast with Eric helms talked about a study with weighted vests. Same calories, same activity, and weight was lost over a period of time without dropping calories progressively. They even talked about a study where they inserted metal ball bearings into rats, and without change to diet or activity the rats all lost weight. Pretty interesting. I think the podcast was about how to lean bulk, if anyone is interested.

Kennyn, it may have been the same guy. They are in the same circle. The bodybuilder was named Eric Salazar I believe.

Lol, this guy had a job or lack of a job I can't remember, where he was able to wear it all day. Idk how many people could get away with that. I could. Hint hint, DP. Lol

Hint hint yourself. I’m the one who said it first. I suppose you could wear it on the night shift and then bring it home to me and I could wear it all day. Kind of ridiculous lose 50 pounds and then put it back on anyhow. LMAO

Diablo, I was a normal weight for about the first 45 years of my life, and a large portion of my food came from the farm, not the grocery store. Meals were meat/seafood with rice and gravy and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. No one was ever on a "diet," we just ate. And, we were all physically active and no one was overweight. So, I know what a healthy lifestyle looks like, I just haven't cared for a very long time. All of you here are helping me to remember and to care again. 💛💜💚

Good post. Thank you. I know it to be true from my personal experience.

Just rereading Kenny's comment about the rats. That's crazy! 😆

Kennyn, I like how you say scale weight. People would be wise to not rely on it only, it is just one of many ways to measure progress. Measurements, strength gains, the mirror, and how you feel are just as if not more important measures of progress and health. Body composition is so important which is why I don't recommend people losing weight and THEN commiting to weight training. If you started the resistance training from the get go you would have truly transformed, not just become a smaller version of your current self. Muscle makes you a larger person, in a good way. Your natural calorie burn goes up since muscle takes more energy to maintain, you're stronger so when you do workout you can push more weight which produces a higher "burn", and your health improves because the lower your body fat percentage, the lower your chances of all obesity related ailments. Not to mention, you're strengthening the most important muscle, the heart.

Check out kennyn's recent post with pics and weight, Diablo. Similar to you posting same weight, different body composition.

Yes, the rat study is neat. The guy who did the weighted vest experiment only added weight when he would lose it. He just made sure to make himself weigh the same thing as when he started dieting. He did zero cardio but he was active. He did 8-10k steps a day. He lost 18 pounds and never had to lower calories. He avoided having to lower calories a lot which usually results in feeling like crap and feeling hungry. Here is a video of them explaining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vN7-sUk3V4&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR0qt1Ru6RnIe7W-dnHe_Bd72pGXrJ4u0aNWf-auXBuc0THL8l6w2Pl3QHs

I'd start with a koala bear. Baby steps
11 Okt 19 vom Mitglied: -Diablo
Yes...koala because they can hang on so you're not doing all the work. Good thinking, dear! Ok Diablo... Let's share a koala instead of a weighted vest and put weighted ball bearings in his ass to make it more effective! 👍🏼

Maybe a sloth would work better then...
